How to choose a game for a five-minute break

A good short-break game has a clear goal, a quick first round and no long setup. Start with a puzzle, word game or arcade challenge where the basic action is obvious within the first minute. A game is not a good five-minute choice if you need to learn several menus, create an account or wait through repeated introductions.

Choose by energy, not only genre

If you want to slow down, choose tile matching, colouring or a simple word puzzle. If you want to reset your focus with a little energy, choose a short race, platformer or ball game. The best choice is usually the one that matches the time and attention you actually have.

A simple first-play rule

Give a new game one focused minute. If the goal and controls are still unclear, return to the library and try another title. A useful browser-game library should make switching easy; there is no need to force a game that does not fit the moment.
